 Bella and the Bug

Louise Peterson generously donated this sculpture to  Harlequin Haven, 100% of the winning bid went toward the mounting veterinary bills. The lucky winner got their choice of natural or cropped ears!!

Comments from the artist: My Great Dane bronzes have been juried into numerous national art shows and have won 33 awards in less than 4 years. The larger Bella and the Bugs have won a total of 5 awards and the life size versions are on display at the National Geographic Society in Washington DC, the Colorado cities of Northgleen and Colorado Springs and soon at the National Sculpture Society in NYC. For a complete list of exhibitions and awards visit my website.

This original sculpture measures 8" long, is a limited edition of 99 pieces and 1 artist proof, cast in the highest quality bronze by the lost-wax method. This piece is numbered, signed by the artist and provided with a certificate of authenticity. Although both cropped and natural ears are pictured together you are bidding on only ONE.

Beauty and the Beast? David and Goliath? I don't know who should be most concerned here, Bella or the bug, but I've seen my Dane show this level of disturbed concentration many times. The piece was originally inspired as I watched Bella focus for many minutes on a fly in a motel room

100% of the winning bid went to benefit Harlequin Haven. The Rescue has been hit with mounting veterinary bills (over $3000 for the month of May, over $2000 in June). Intestinal blockages, a displaced hip, and then a neglected and abused dog suffering from malnutrition and an untreated fracture of her pelvis require expensive surgeries and post-op care. Add to that heartworm positive dogs coming into the Rescue on a regular basis. Heartworm Disease requires very expensive medication and careful convalescent care.

It is not just the surgeries that are expensive. Post-op care and rehabilitation expenses add to the cost. Donny and Bebe needed hydro therapy to rebuild wasted muscles. It will be needed several times a day for weeks and maybe months for Donny. The nearest facility for this was two hours away. Thanks to many generous donors HHGDR was able to install a hydro pool.  Donny and Bebe were the immediate beneficiaries, but this type of rehabilitation would speed the recovery of many in the future. In the past we have had dogs come to us so weak from malnutrition and abuse that they could not walk, and we have saved them, but this type of therapy would have helped them recover more quickly.
