Saturday was my lucky day!!! When my owners decided they no longer wanted me, even after I had given them puppies. Lucky for me, they gave me to a family in Wilmington, who already had 2 Danes.  After all, if you already have 2 Danes, what is 1 more!! Although they did not want another Dane, the new family was appalled at my condition and immediately agreed to take me. I had lived my entire life outside, and as you can tell from my pictures below, feeding me was NOT my owners’ top priority!! The new family immediately contacted Harlequin Haven. After just a couple of emails, arrangements were made for me to come to the rescue the next morning!! I knew life was going to get better when I got to spend Saturday night indoors with the new family. Not only was I fed some yummy food, they even gave me a BATH!! Wow!! A bath feels so much better than being rained on!! Sunday was a very busy day! Not only did I get up early to go meet my ride to the rescue, but when I got here, they trimmed my nails, cleaned my infected ears, and then took more pictures!! I now have a very soft bed with blankets to snuggle on, tons of toys, although I am not sure what they are for, AND I am fed every few hours!

Now for the bad news!! Just by looking at me my new family had good reason to be appalled. I had injured my tail a while back and I kept chewing it. Now not only is it open, but it is also infected! PLUS, I only weigh 75 pounds! What they couldn't see until I was tested was that I am heartworm positive! The rescue is talking with their veterinarian to see what the next step in my recovery will be. At this point I am being fed lots of small meals and I am on Doxycycline to get me ready for my heartworm treatment.

Grandma and the volunteers at Harlequin Haven are showing me lots of love with gentle pets, kind words and soft kisses. And my new pup friends have assured me that the love, care, and yummy treats will continue while I wait for my forever home.

Update 8/25: Well it was decided that I had to go to the veterinarian this morning to get blood work done and for him to see my tail so he could decide how to proceed. After he saw my tail it was decided that I needed surgery ASAP. The fear was that my tail was so badly infected that it was best not to  wait for me to gain weight and to be treated for heartworm. BUT they also did another type of test and it showed that I also have Anaplasmosis! I would say what else but I am afraid of what the answer would be!! I was spayed and had my tail amputated today and will continue taking the Doxycycline plus a whole bunch of other medicines to help me heal and to get me ready for my heartworm treatment in a month or so!! Well I think that is all for today I am really tired and I just want to go to bed and rest! One last thing if you would like to know more about tick borne diseases I had Grandma put a link on our webpage comparing the different ones.
Update 8/29: Well it has been a busy week!! Since I have arrived at the rescue I have had my tail amputated, been spayed, and had blood work BUT the biggest news is, in only 7 days I have GAINED 10 POUNDS!!! How great is that!!!!  Okay you really cannot see it much yet, but I sure can feel it!!! Well I would love to keep updating you BUT it is time to eat again!! So I gotta go!!! I will update you again next week!!
Update 9/05: Just wanted to give you another GREAT update!!! The stitches are out of my tail!! It won't be long and I will be getting ready for my heartworm treatment, I can't wait!!
Update 9/25: As you can see from my picture below I have gained my weight and am a beautiful Dane! It won't be long and I will receive my first immiticide shot for my heartworm. I can't wait!!!
Update 10/23: Well I received my first immiticide injection last Saturday and although Grandma had told me it was going to hurt I was clueless. Heck I thought my tail had hurt!! Oh well 1 down and 2 more to go!! I am scheduled to have my next 2 doses in the middle of November!
Update 11/14: I had my last 2 immiticide injections and WOW do I hurt!! Just think if my owners had just cared enough about me to give me that once a month pill I would not have had to go through all this pain!! How stupid of me to even think that because if they had cared about me I would have been a loved inside dog!! Okay I am off my soapbox for now! I am going to go lay down and hope the pain meds kick in and it eases the pain at least a little!!!

Update 12/17: I am NOW ready for adoption!!! SO who wants a beautiful sweet and loving young lady?

Please can you spare a few dollars to help the Rescue continue to help me and other Danes like me? It would be greatly appreciated. Without the Rescue who knows where we would have ended up!!
Thanks, Jolene
